[Parents’ Quick Guide] You’ll (Very Likely) Only Do This Once — The Boarding School Roadmap: Four Key Stages, Explained

Choosing School

Applying to British boarding schools follows a familiar pattern at almost every school: Registration → Entrance Tests → Interview → Offer. Here’s a clear breakdown of each step—and how Academic Asia can support you throughout.

1. Registration: get everything right, first time

  • How it works: Nearly all schools use online registration via a link on the school website. You’ll enter parent and pupil details.
  • Common required documents:
    • School reports from the past two years
    • Passport and ID
    • Supplementary form (music, art, sport, extracurriculars, etc.)
    • Current school contact details (name/email/phone) for a reference
  • References (handled directly between schools):
    • Open format: a teacher writes an email or letter
    • School form: a PDF or online form with set questions (study habits, homework submission, strengths and areas for development, etc.)
  • Application fees: Anywhere from £0 to £700. Most accept credit cards; some accept GBP bank transfers or wires.
  • Deadlines: Vary by school. Late applications are often not considered—submit early.

2. Entrance Exam: targetted preparation for best results

  • Most year groups sit three components: English, Mathematics, and Reasoning.
    • English: reading comprehension, grammar, writing, vocabulary (deep literary analysis is rare)
    • Mathematics: aligned to the UK syllabus
    • Reasoning: Verbal Reasoning (text‑based) and Non‑verbal Reasoning (shapes/sequences)
  • Upper years (applying to Year 12) may need Subject Papers:
    • Based on intended A Level subjects (e.g., Physics/Chemistry/Biology)
    • Depending on the school, there may be 1–3 papers
  • A small number of schools ask Year 11 and below to take Science papers—again follow the UK syllabus.
  • Need the UK Maths/Science syllabus? AA can provide the relevant versions.

3. Interview: stand out and impress in 20 minutes!

  • Format: Typically a one‑to‑one online interview of around 20 minutes—from home is fine.
  • Scheduling: We coordinate with the school and share the Zoom link.
  • What matters: clear communication, critical thinking, academic motivation, co‑curricular breadth, and character.

4. Offer: watch the deadlines, secure your place

  • Response window: usually 2–4 weeks.
  • Two essentials:
    • Sign and return the acceptance/enrolment form (parent signature required)
    • Pay the deposit
  • Once both are received, your place is confirmed. Do this before the deadline.
