Looking back at my time studying abroad, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia and excitement. Reflecting on my days at a boarding school in the UK, I remember it was both an adventure and a challenge. Homesickness and nerves were part of the journey, but they were all elements of personal growth. Here are some practical tips from my boarding school experience that I hope will help all AA juniors smoothly navigate this undoubtedly thrilling journey!
Homesickness is Totally Normal!
First things first: dealing with homesickness is a rite of passage for every boarder. Keeping a busy schedule was key! Joining clubs and sports not only helped me make new friends but also kept my mind off missing home. I learned not to shy away from my feelings; many of my fellow students were experiencing the same emotions! Opening up and sharing with classmates really lightened that lonely load.
Must-Try Foods in the UK!
There has been a lot of chatter about the food in British boarding schools, and while I can’t speak for every institution, I found the food was often better than expected—sometimes even a pleasant surprise! The dining hall offered a variety of options, unlike the fixed meal boxes you might find back in Hong Kong. You could choose your favourite dishes! My personal favourites included Toad in the Hole, Sunday Roast, and Sticky Toffee Pudding. Not only did I savour authentic British cuisine, but I also got a kick out of their quirky names. And let’s not forget unique traditions, like Pancake Day in February—each school had its own culture, creating wonderful memories!
Getting Along with Your Homestay Family
Building a good relationship with my homestay family was crucial. Boarding life gave me a chance to dive deep into local culture, learn authentic English, and adapt to British etiquette. When entering a new environment, making a good first impression was vital! A friendly smile, casual conversation, or even a small gift helped bridge any gaps. Sharing my hometown culture, teaching them a phrase in my native language, or cooking a traditional dish really brought us closer together!
Make the Most of This Unique Opportunity!
Studying in the UK remains one of the most valuable chapters of my life. Attending a boarding school was a privilege not everyone gets, and I’m grateful to my parents for this experience. I cherish the warm moments spent with my host family—sharing stories over dinner, watching TV together, and enjoying weekend family activities. Life at a British boarding school was filled with unique traditions and unforgettable experiences. Once I immersed myself, it quickly felt like my second home.
