Berkhamsted School was founded in 1541 for boys and was later joined by the girls school. Set in the historic town of Berkhamsted where William the Conqueror was crowned in 1066, it is 35 minutes from Heathrow by taxi and 30 minutes from central London by train. A large school of 2000 students (from 3 to 18 years) in total the academic results are excellent; 582 students took A Level in 2021 and 53% achieved A*/A. 5 students were accepted at Oxford and Cambridge. Since 2012 62 students have gone to Oxford and Cambridge. The school has a rich and varied activity programme that extends through the weekends. It has a large number of orchestras and ensembles, a vibrant theatre seating an audience of 500, a Art department and display centre, refurbished Design & Technology studio, swimming pool, sports hall, floodlit 3G sports pitch and fitness centre. The school was recently voted the third best independent school in the latest edition of School Sport Magazine. The national publication ranked each school based on 20 different sports and 120 national competitions throughout 2019 including becoming National Champions in Lacrosse. The boarding houses cater well for international students: a full induction programme is arranged beforehand; EAL lessons are included for every student; a full weekend of activities are provided; and there is a successful basketball team featuring many boarding students.
