Why do we need a Guardian?
It is a requirement that all school age students have a guardian if the parents do not live in the UK. The guardian will act as the parents' representative whilst the student is studying in the UK. The majority of independent schools make it a condition of admission to their school that any overseas student must have a UK based guardian. It is also a visa requirement for students applying for a student visa. Parents can appoint a relative/close family friend to be their child's guardian. They must be aged 25 or older and resident in the UK. The guardian cannot be a full time student living in University halls or share accommodation with any other adult under 25 years of age. If you do not have a relative or close friend who can be a guardian, you should ideally appoint a guardianship organisation which is accredited by AEGIS (The Association of Educational Guardians for International Students).
